Questions That Arise in the Dark
When light fades, our senses awaken.
The two-person exhibition 《Black Box in the White Cube》 by Jeon Youngjoo and Jeong Woobin (1AO space, Oct 21–Nov 1, 2025) presents the unseen not as absence, but as a condition for thought.
By draping the institutional “white cube” with the theatrical “black box,” the artists transform the viewer from a distant observer into a participant on stage. Their darkness conceals and reveals at once, shaking the fragile balance between perception and cognition.

Jeon Youngjoo — Painting the Uncontrollable Darkness
Jeon sees the absence of light not as a void, but as a force beyond control — the very source of painting itself.
Across the uncertain surface of oil paint, where materiality collides with chance, he traces a tension between control and dissolution.
In Chewed Gum of Caldera Lake, the artist renders a landscape that pays reverence to worlds untouched by human order.
His canvases remain deliberately incomplete — yet within that incompleteness lies the first spark of perception.
Jeong Woobin — Shadows of Myth Inside the Room
Jeong’s darkness is nature seeping indoors.
During his life in Thailand, the sounds of stray dogs, the scent of tropical rain, and even the gaze of a cockroach became materials for perception.
In My Deity in the Gaze, the cry of a Tokay gecko is mistaken for birdsong — the instant when familiar logic collapses and myth takes its place.
His paintings recompose uncertain images into sacred forms, asking, once again: what does it mean to truly see?
Darkness Is Not the End, but the Beginning
《Black Box in the White Cube》 reveals painting’s double nature — to show and to obscure.
For both artists, darkness is never a lack; it’s a fertile ground for new perception.
There are worlds that cannot be illuminated by light alone. This exhibition opens the door to that unseen realm.
