PIATE 2026 Vietnam VIP Guest Artist Vo Viet Dung | Spirituality and Images in the Age of AI

PIATE 2026 Vietnam VIP Guest Artist Vo Viet Dung | Spirituality and Images in the Age of AI
As AI generates images and digital technology rapidly reshapes our senses and everyday lives, how might long-standing spiritual symbols and religious imagery be read anew?
Vo Viet Dung, PIATE 2026’s Vietnam VIP Guest Artist, places this question at the centre of both his artistic practice and research. He explores how digital technology and biotechnology are transforming human life, perception, worldviews, and traditional religious ideologies.
Working beyond the familiar languages of painting and sculpture, he uses video art and mixed media to illuminate the point where technology meets the human interior.
This article introduces Vo Viet Dung’s artistic practice, essential visitor information for PIATE 2026, and how new YEATU members can receive a complimentary invitation ticket.

From Hue, Vietnam, to Thailand: A Practice Rooted in Research

Vo Viet Dung is a visual artist from Hue, Vietnam. After earning a BFA from Hue University of Arts, he completed an MFA at Mahasarakham University in Thailand. He is currently pursuing a PhD in International Visual Arts at the same university.
His work is not intended simply to present technology as a new or convenient tool. Instead, it examines how technological advances reshape the ways we understand the world—our beliefs, senses, and relationship to enduring symbols.
This line of inquiry brings contemporary social change into dialogue with the memory of traditional spirituality. Images on screen become more than information to consume: they prompt us to reconsider what we believe and what we find meaningful.
How Do Spiritual Symbols Change in the Age of AI?
Today, AI and digital platforms place countless images before us at speed. Within this shift, Vo Viet Dung asks what spiritual symbols and religious imagery gain—and lose—in meaning.
For him, technology is less a tool for delivering answers than a catalyst for thought. Through video art and mixed media, viewers move beyond the surface of the image to encounter shifting emotions, beliefs, and perceptions at the intersection of people and technology.
When you encounter his work at PIATE 2026, consider the following questions:
What emotions do the digital images and symbols in the work evoke?
How do traditional spiritual or religious images change when they meet technology?
What does the artist seek to reveal about humanity through technology?
Amid technological progress, what do we believe—and what do we begin to sense anew?
A Practice Expanded Through Video Art and Mixed Media
Vo Viet Dung has maintained an active practice in video art as well as exhibitions across Vietnam. Rather than remaining within a single genre, his career reflects an artistic world that moves across the boundaries of contemporary visual art and technology.
